How To Perform
- 1 Set the bench to 30–45 degrees. Higher angles shift more load to the front delts.
- 2 Grip the bar slightly wider than shoulder-width, thumbs wrapped.
- 3 Unrack and position the bar over your upper chest/collarbone region.
- 4 Lower the bar to the upper chest with controlled descent.
- 5 Press back up to lockout without losing shoulder blade retraction.
Form Cues
- ✓ Keep your shoulder blades pinched together and down throughout.
- ✓ Lower to the upper chest, not the mid chest — this is where the angle of the bench directs the load.
- ✓ Do not over-arch the lower back to the point where the movement becomes a flat press.
Common Mistakes
- ✗ Setting the bench too high (60+ degrees) — this turns the movement into a front delt exercise.
- ✗ Letting the elbows flare too wide at the bottom.
- ✗ Using excessive lower back arch to compensate for lack of upper chest strength.
💡 Professor Splits Says:
Progressive overload is the engine of muscle growth. Track your weights and aim to add small increments weekly. For Incline Barbell Press, this means gradually increasing load, volume (sets × reps), or decreasing rest periods over time.
